Match Review: Liverpool 2-2 Man City

Saturday, 21 November 09, 09:17 AM · Comments (0)

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - NOVEMBER 21: Daniel Agger of Liverpool receives treatment for a cut during the Barclays Premier League match between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield on November 21, 2009 in Liverpool, England.

This boy really is unlucky with injuries

Sigh... another draw then. Weirdly enough, I'm not as upset as I thought I would be, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. The thing is, I believe that we need to start from somewhere, right? I can't really tell you that I thought we'd start back winning staigh away after all those losses. I'm scared for Rafa though. I'm going to make a controversial statement now: I want Rafa to stay. Yes, stay.

Onto the match now. We had quite a few players back from injury with Yossi, Riera, Aurelio and El Zhar starting on the bench. Maybe there is something to that placenta fluid thing after all. Speaking of injuries, there needed to be two substitutions within half hour of the match because Agger (AGAIN!!!) and Babel were both injured. Babel limped off after a De Jong tackle, while Dan had to be stretchered off after a head-to- head collision with Toure. I'm not too sure if he'll want placenta fluid on his head.... Eww. Not very nice imagery, is it?

Overall, it wasn't a bad performance and I thought we desrved the win today. The only problem was....the defence. Now, how many times have I said that for the season already? Every time the oppositon has a corner, my automatic reaction is 'Shit, they're going to score now', and the painful thing is, it usually happens. Can anyone tell me how many of our goals conceeded aren't from set pieces? This is just annoying now. Those Adebayor and Ireland goals really should not have been let in. Skrtel should have stopped the Adebayor goal.

But atleast he scored. Yes people, Martin Skrtel finally scored his first goal for Liverpool!!! That's surely a positive. And it was a damn good goal too, and it wasn't a header. You'd think he would score a header, eh? And generally, he was good, but the mistakes he made cost us. It's a pity, because he really was good. Also great was, the always wonderful, Yossi Benayoun. That equalizer less than a minute after City went ahead was brilliant. I swear, that man is awesome!! Another positive is that the team actually looked like they wanted to win, which, in my opinion was a problem with some of the other matches.

Stevie G looks like he's almost 100% back. Yay!!! But,  for the life of me, I can't figure out why Alberto Aquilani hasn't actually been played as yet. No, I don't count 15 minutes as 'being played'. I'd like to assume that Rafa knows better than me, but I still.... And something that I've said many times before: Lucas needs to work on his finishing. We could have won the match in the 94th minute if he could have actually gotten his shot on target. Why do you do this to me, Lucas Leiva? He always gets in the right places, but his finishing is, well....less than good.

You can find the Match Report from the club's website here. And so, even though it was two points dropped and city are still above us in the Table, there were some positives, and do see a turn around starting from the Merseyside Derby. I really believe that. There's a reason that I'm not saying the Debrecen match. That's because I think we'll win but fiorentina will also win. If we do acyually make it to the next round, that will be a mirace, because only divine intervention can help us now. But that's for Monday's blog.

That's it for today.

You'll Never Walk Alone.
