Aston Villa will always be the number one team in the Midlands

Saturday, 20 September 08, 07:48 AM · Comments (40)

So, Sunday is derby day and the chance to continue our dominance over the 'baggies'. I am struggling to remember the last time they beat us. I think it was when Tony Morley was bizarrely sent off at half time in the League Cup.

Personally I love local derbies and have done since my school days when every boy (and the occasional girl) supported one of the local teams.

I grew up near Wolverhampton so the school was split quite evenly between Wolves, Albion, Walsall and Villa fans, (you don't get 'Blue Noses' in Wolverhampton). There were a couple of glory hunting Liverpool fans but we didn't count these as real supporters.

This was back in the early 80's when the Midlands dominated the top division. You had all the West Midland teams (except little Walsall of course) with the addition of Forest, Notts County, Derby, Leicester and Stoke. Nearly half the First Division within 50 miles of Birmingham. Local bragging rights were so important and that is how it should be.

My brother has always been a Wolves supporter and they haven't beaten the Villa since 1980 so I have enjoyed endless delight there. Our clubs have only met twice in the last few years but hopefully that will soon be changing as Wolves are top of the Championship. I really want them promoted now so that we can beat them again next season, although I don't want to see them lifting the same Championship trophy that Dennis Mortimer lifted aloft in 1981.

What I would love is for both Wolves and Birmingham to claim the two automatic promotion spots. Then Coventry could nip in and win the play-offs with the Albion somehow avoiding relegation.

That would mean that a quarter of the Premier League next season would be from the West Midlands. How good would that be? We could have derbies galore and the Villa could continue to dominate them all. Perhaps they could even bring back 'Star Soccer' (sorry showing my age again).

Let's start by putting the Albion in their place on Sunday!

The only way a midlands team other than Villa will survive in the prem, is if there are 4 of us.

Hugh Johns was commentating on the 1966 World Cup Final, but everyone remembers Wolstenholme.

Why will we always be biggest? Like questions that have plagued mankind through the centuries, such as why are the stars where they are.

Using Okhams razor where the most obvious answer is usually the correct one: Because we are!

Looking forward to this tomorrow. Although I hear we played poorly Thursday I'm happy we came back with quite a good result! After watching spurs game Monday I thought we played well but knew we had a busy week ahead, after winning 2/2 this week the lads should be well up for this, curtis will be drilling it into his team mates that he'll be desprate to make sure they get a good result. My borther will be there but I'll be at the pub round the corner hoping there is a good number of fans on both side for some banter! Apprantly its 1983 since they last beat us! My m8 who supports WBA keeps telling me now is the time but I'm sure he has being saying that for years. Bring them on...

totally agree sam we got very lucky scrapping into 6th place and into europe and we have been lucky not to balls it up over the last few euro games

unless marlon starts producing along with gabby i cant see where goals are going to come from in the next few months...

needed to buy a striker in window and mon dropped a clanger again he is totaly inept in the transfer market....sack him from buying players and bring back o'leary as director of football....at least he can spot some talent

at the start of the transfer window people sed he needed 8 players at least. now we have that we are spoilt for choice at the back and in midfield so i dont see how you can still complain.

yes we got what was needed ...to replace the outgoing player... we did that but not added

yes we won but we could of lost it in the first 20 minutes

face it we got lucky.... shocking that their player even needed to do that stupid hand ball... and if it werent for coker not forcing the keeper and defender to cock up we would probably lost that game ....we got lucky...lets see how we use our new fangled squad in the next few months because mon dont like to chance a team around unless he has to...

We should have bought foreign, as foreign equals cheap. If Milner was Croatian we could have got him for £2million.

we could of even raided the championship theres loads of players cheap that are good enough to step up etc....

then again might be even cheaper to fly out to south america and buy some columbian again on the cheap

Bloody hell lads...sorry I missed the bus and have run all the way up town to be here. I called in a couple of boozers on the way. Am I in time for the taxi to the club...? =D

Anyway, back to the club. At leastI see people on here actually talking sense and what I have said for years..! If MON had looked abroad we could have signed twice as many players instead of what he has. THerefore we could really say Villa are the biggest club in the Midlands. I see no excuses and MON will have to be judged on this season...! Enough said..! :?

hes skimming through on luck...still to prove to me hes got what it takes when he still signs players like harewood and knight...would sir alex have brought them.... we need a manager like rudd gullitt hed bring some sexy football to vp...and some cheap imported players that would do a good job and be happy to squad fill etc.... cant see sidwell being too happy about not getting in the team when he gets fit... and curtis davis is already complaining about possibly loosing his place to cueller

Villa win... No doubt!!
Never lived in Brum and never lucky enough, or deserved to have a derby ticket, whoever it was.
Nearest thing where I was from was Chesterfield/Mansfield. Christ!! That was a dark one!!
As for mention of Tony Morley in the original article...
Such an exciting player back in the glory days. The buzz around Villa Park when he got the ball and had space to run was quite something. There have been guys since, but Ashley has that electric excitement thing now. We need to keep him in one piece.
The tackles he's taken already this season are a bit scary.
It's late so will shut up.

Ofcourse we are the biggest team in the midlands. Boring.......thats the point, we should be trying to aim for the biggest team in england, show some ambition, sign a full squad. We have enough english players, you could get three or four potential stars from south america for what we paid for Shorey or Harewood. Chelsea are close to signing Mineiro on a free....dont know much about him, but if hes going to Chelsea he seems a decent player, why do we not try and sign players like this? Stephen Appiah still available on a free........there are surely more too. My point is there is no reason for us not to have a full squad.......and to be serious contenders for any silver ware or qualification for the Champions League we must be able to beat teams like Stoke or West Brom. It would be a failure if we didnt win today, just like the loss at Stoke.

But seriously, we all know that we are the biggest team in the midlands.......anyone and everyone knows that
