Captain Rooney Is Always A Leader On The Pitch

If John Terry does not recover from an ankle injury Wayne Rooney will captain England for the first time against Brazil.

Fabio Capello said:

"I hope that John Terry will be fit. The doctor has told me they have confidence that he will recover, so it's possible that he will be fit, but if he's not 100 per cent fit, he won't play and the captain will be Rooney."

"I think Rooney is ready to be a captain. Why not? When you choose a player to be a captain, he has to be a leader in the dressing room or a leader on the pitch. For me, that's really important. Rooney is always a leader on the pitch - less in the dressing room, but he's young. He can be a leader in the dressing room also."

"My first captain is John Terry. The vice-captain is Rio because they are really good on the pitch and really good in the dressing room. But I think now we need one leader on the pitch because we miss a lot of players and we need one leader on the pitch. For this reason, I choose Wayne Rooney."

"It is a straightforward decision for me. I do not see why not. Rooney has to understand that the next game he will be focused because he will be the captain of the national team."

"I remember the best players in the world - Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Platini - and they were captains. They scored goals, so why not? You have to be a leader on the pitch. All the best players were captains. They were also captains of the national teams. Diego Maradona is another example."
