FACT: Real Madrid Is The Best Team In Spain And Europe

Thursday, 26 November 09, 05:42 AM · Comments (61)

One Real Madrid fan was bragging saying

"Heck, we are bashed out for not playing well while we are the best team in Spain and Europe, offensive, defensively or however you look at it."

Well, as a matter of fact, he was not bragging. He was saying the truth.

Thing is, the media can be, sometimes or most of the times, misleading and evil. Take a look at the Spanish dailies for example, two to mention in particular: Marca & AS  (the later's name is derived from assholes by the way). All they care about is getting Pellegrini sacked.

No matter how many games the coach wins or how effectively and collectively we play, the Spanish media portrays Pellegrini as the only problem the club has. It is undeniable that Manuel has made a few mistakes so far, but he is clearly not the problem nor it is the players. The major and real problem as I said previously relies within the philosophy and mentality of the club.

There are three things that have been going on at the club for over seven years now. Changing presidents, changing coaches, and of course changing a dozen of players at once.

Just take a look back at what happened this summer. A new president, a new coach and a new group of players. This has happened a lot in a very short period of time and all the blame has always been one one person only which is the coach. It was rare that Raul, Guti, Ramos, Casillas or Van Nistelrooy were blamed for something. It was rare that the club's president was blamed for all of this. The media was just focusing on the coach for some reason or another and it has become very ridiculous recently with Marca and AS calling for Pellegrini's head everyday.

To those who say Real Madrid is history and fantasy football, I'll give you numbers, If that's your sort of thing.

Real Madrid are having their best start in about 18 years. They have collected a total of 28 points from possible 33 in just eleven games. They are also topping the league with Barcelona lagging with one point behind.

Statistically speaking, Real Madrid are the best in all aspects. In terms of defense, attack, holding possession, pressure on the opponent...etc see for yourself:

Now let's analyze our performances in the Champions League. Just after five games, Real sit first on the table (with 10 points) while other teams praised for their fantastic performances (by the likes of Marca and AS) such as Barcelona and Inter Milan are struggling with the possibility of them being eliminated (and I'm not going to talk about Liverpool) and no, Real's group is tough as well. AC Milan, Olympic Mersielle and Zurich are not easy, trust me.

Some interesting stats:

  • Real Madrid have scored in all five UCL matches this season.
  • Real Madrid have carried our more plays in attack than any other team (496), followed by Porto and Atletico Madrid (480). Two-hundred fifty-nine of the 496 have been at home, which ranks first among UCL teams.
  • Real Madrid have carried out 29 plays in their opponents' box at home and share the lead in this category with Barcelona.
  • Real Madrid is the most efficient direct free-kick taking team thanks to Ronaldo’s two goals in Matchday 1. Fifty percent of Real Madrid’s direct free-kicks have resulted in goals, while Olympique Lyonnais are second at 33.33%.
  • Real Madrid’s three set-piece goals are best among all teams and put them in a three-way tie with Olympique Lyonnais and Girondins Bordeaux.
  • Real Madrid force most corners in their favor. They have taken over 40 corner kicks.

After last night's game, you should see more numbers than the above. The bottom line is, Real are not doing as bad as the Spanish media is saying.

That is not to say Real are playing beautiful football. They are just playing football and getting results. I can't see a team at the moment which is producing amazing results and playing sexy football week in and week out. Not even Barcelona.

Plus, considering that the team is new, from its supreme (Perez) to the new secretary (which I met in Madrid and is hot), these are not horrible results at all. Add to that the fact that Ronaldo has been out for about two months. Pellegrini had to cope without him and anyone would be liar If he told you Real didn't miss him.

Now that he is back, you should see more improvements. He only played for 10 minutes last night and changed everything.

It would be interesting to see how Marca react to these statistics and it would be awesome to see their reaction If Real beat Barca. After all, they set the Clasico as the day when Pellegrini will be sacked!

Marca really are stupid, and recently I think they have started supporting Barca and still people call them to be our agenda newspaper (read Mundo Deportivo—a true agenda paper for gods sake, they are so fuckin biased it'll make you cry and laugh at the same time). Marca was the one that had an audio interview with Perez in which Perez made it clear that he won't be sacking Pellegrini (at least for this season) because he knows the team has many new faces. But still Marca go out and say Pellegrini will be sacked if he doesn't win the Classico, even though he has given us the best start in 17 years! It is Marca which is giving Perez a bad name and giving a chance to criticize us, and when have people needed a chance to crticize us!

The whole media is biased against Real Madrid, that's why I prefer to read your blog and Corey's! :)

Hala Madrid!

Since I am not from Spain, can I come and bombard Marca buildings - this way they will shut up forever.

Joking apart - Pellegrini is doing great, and he has balls of steel. Why? He is benching Raul (he was completely lost yesterday), Guti completely out(although he is injured right now), Gago is packing etc.

Being a long season, he is managing well the players and players are improving day in day out. If we draw or loose against Barca, Pellegrini should still remain as coach since the team is still in its infancy. Barca have been with the same team for years.

Furthermore, which team play wonderful football? Who? Arsenal? Ehhh? They lost against Sunderland. Who are Sunderland? And if you look at the way Barca played against Deportivo - is that what they call beautiful football? Inter? What? Were Inter playing after all?

So Marca please shut up.

Nice article btw.

While I do agree with everything you said about Marca and AS.

Their is a positive aspect out of the constant criticism; See if we managed to be this successful, criticism is only going to make the team be on the tip of their toes and try to give even more. The pressure right now is immense but the team knows all about these stats and they'll feel more responsible each game.

Pellegrini however agrees with Marca and AS. He thought our performance yesterday was bad. For me I'd take the 3 points even if we won it cheating.

I'm thoroughly bored at home right now, so I just LOVE being back here and reading all your comments. The blog has definitely vastly improved since I was here last, and it's refreshing to get these knowledgable and circumspect analyses.

Am desperate for any news where I am, about the various affairs going on, but refuse to read Marca or AS. So thanks so much for posting on the various mouthpieces (read Gasbags) out there that have nothing better to do than disparage our BELOVED Team.

Am curious as to what anyone's thoughts here might be ref: our approach to the Barca game. I have my thoughts, but as usual I'll wait for someone to post, to post them.

Amazing stats there..Adam !! Great job !!
But I have one question regarding last night's game which I happened to miss(not my fault,We don't get coverage of LA LIGA or Real's champions league games here in INDIA,only the game against Milan was shown live..I hope you get this issue across to the club somehow..please)
and coming back to the question..I heard on BBC that the team was booed off the pitch at the end of the game and Pellegrini admitted in the post match presser that the team is not playing the football either he or the players want..wanted to know whether they played so bad last night or is it just a case of too much expectations? Thanks in advance..keep up the good work.

This keeps happening with Real Madrid. There is never an iota of patience or understanding from the fans. Whats wrong with a 1-0 scoreline? Arguably Arsenal play the most attractive football among all the clubs through out europe(better than Barcelona). But it is not that they win every match with a goal riot. Infact Arsenal was once nicknamed as '1-nil' Arsenal during the 90's. Its alright. It was not that we were provided with one chance and we did not create any. We tried and were not lucky or as pellegrini put good enough to see the ball at the back of the net on more than one occasion.
I am sure if we beat the catalans by 1-0, still there would be unrest and boos.
I hope we get to see the Clasico atleast here. The streams are irritating.

Pellegrini was totally honest. He said he didn't like the performance and I agree with him. To be clear, he said the win was important but the team didn't play any sort of beautiful football, no style at all -- it wasn't the kind of football which helps you beat a team like Barca or Chelsea. Zurich were just very afraid to attack and hadn't been another team in their shoes, we would have lost.

However, the good thing was the constant improvement of Alonso and the excellent come back of Ronaldo. Once Cristiano stepped on the pitch, the game changed. He looked very serious and dangerous and could have scored a second for us.

To sum up, we didn't play badly (that's why we won), we dominated (because Zurich weren't strong) and we tried to score but couldn't. What we need to do know is to continue to improve and start employing a style. Things will fall into place.

Even if we win nothing this season, I will not fire Pellegrini because it is quite obvious from all his press conferences he is trying to work out a system and this takes time. What we need most is patience. As far as Marca and AS are concerned, well, I've never bothered by anything they've said. AS is still fine but Marca has always been a joke. The Sun equivalent of Spain.

Although I dont agree with the numbers and stats you have given. You see number can often mislead and I think in this case they are. Barcelona if they play like how they have done so far and if Real continue their random play (I sometimes fail to understand the whole strategy) then Barca will win the title. Stats usually only make sense over a long period of time, and now the first few games.

But the Barca are a team already while Real are trying to build one. This takes time and really we need to be patient. If we sack the coach, the new coach will have to start from scratch. I do not see any point in that.

People tell me numbers talk. Barca had lots of impressive stats last year and they were praised for that. Well, guess what. These are all valid statistics, in Spain and Europe, so for anyone who needs numbers, there you go.

Now for those like me, who needs numbers AND beautiful football on the pitch, these convince me more that we are on the right track. As you said, Barca are already a team, because they don't mess up with their club with changing coaches and presidents every summer.

Barca have scored 29 goals. Madrid has scored 27 goals. Barca have 0 losses. Madrid has 1 loss. These stats are true and real, you find them in the league table. Good one Adam, how I wish there would be more educated Barcelona fans here that would offer better opinions and not merely bashing Real Madrid; but I guess that shows Madridistas are more civilized.

I think Pellegrini already laid out his long-term plan from the start and these are slowly showing already. Raul being benched, Gago to be loaned. Guti's situation was unexpected but the discipline Pellegrini imposed is awesome. I think he really believes in Real Madrid that's why he's staunchly implementing this changes albeit slowly.

As for the upcoming El Clasico, we're obviously not the favourite to win but I'm hoping for a surprise.

But as a football club, I admire and have pure respect for Real Madrid. This is a great club with great a FOOLBALL history and noone can deny it.
Politics and philosophies aside, when it comes to football let's not have any personal against each other. You don't have to be sorry, believe me, I have seen a lot of Real Madrid fans and they could be the most arrogant and irritating people I have ever seen.

Having said that, I blame a lot of things on Barcelona. Real Madrid is not a club sympolized by Franco. Trust me, we had nothing to do with him and all of this politics talk is generally generated by the Barca folks including Laporta now.

I will do a post in the future explaining the whole thing. Real Madrid is whiter than you think.

we are a much better team compared to last year but we shouldn't underestimate Barca, their system is so steady and mature. they are still on their peak while we are still in a progress to maximize our potentials. the game against zurich is a good sign that we've already found out how we should play like. i personally believe the return of CR9 would possibly wake benzema up. the key to win is "lassana", he is one of the best ball winner in the world now, but sometimes he just carries the ball too much and this is def not sth a ball winner should do. i just hope to see him focus more on his defensive duty. otherwisse xavi and iniesta can easily dominate us in the midfield. Lass gotta the be the one who pressures them and backs up Kaka with xabi as the distributor. i would like to see marcelo start ahead of either raul or benzema with CR9 be the 2nd striker. hala madrid

Hello guys,
I felt really bad that some of the Barca fans are being stupid here. I, being a Barca fan, want to ask sorry for that. I don't know about this blog but you guys are always welcomed in our blog. Infact many Real Madrid fans are regular visiters...both good and stupid ones (as...

Am curious Vivia_Barca, are you female? Just a Sherlock analysis of your posting suggested that to me. IF not, I feel like a fool, but could not resist asking anyway.

Couldn't agree with you more.

I wish all Madridistas who call Barca - Farsa - would be in one bar, cheering RM on. And Madrididtas who call Barca - Barca - would be in another bar, cheering RM on. I would be in the Barca bar!

You don't have to be sorry, believe me, I have seen a lot of Real Madrid fans and they could be the most arrogant and irritating people I have ever seen.

Having said that, I blame a lot of things on Barcelona. Real Madrid is not a club sympolized by Franco. Trust me, we had nothing to...

Look forward with GREAT interest to that posting Adam.

I, too, am guilty of the Franco jokes. But it's one thing to just pick something up from the airwaves (the media) and the other to get information from knowledgeable people. But first, you have to FIND said knowledgeable people. :P

Am GLAD I found you. =D

When people mention Franco with Real Madrid, that means they dont know shit about Madrid!

I would wipe my ass with that Catalunya or Barca flag/towel/blanket anything. Fuck Barca

Puyol revealed barca's key to win is "possession" once they are able to maintain the possession like they used to, we are gonna be in trouble cuz we gotta play under their control. we have the whole bunch of muscles on attack and our player's individual talent wouldn't be worse than barca's are, but they all would become useless when they have everything under their control. in this regard, all of our players on the pitch, including attacking players have to participate on defense, they gotta do all the dirty work on the midfield like the attacking players of valencia and sevilla do all the time. once we are able to eliminate the space in the midfield, our chance to win would be increased, but this is gonna be extremely hard against Xavi and Iniesta.

I think this games outcome is going to be determined by 2 factors.

1- Real Madrids will power.
2- How much effort Barcelona are willing to give.

I believe in our team; especially when Raul is benched; I think as much as we've looked forward to this game after the 6-2 defeat the new players had to also had to share the resposibility of overturning it (someday) when they signed their contracts.

i really think real madrid involve in match fixing if the play with raul upfront tomorrow ..... Higuain had been going better and scoring to bench him just for raul to play is so so so so so crazy.......what did raul play the last game to deserve to play on sunday .....

It's unlikely that Raul will start tomorrow. Higuain may be benched to make space for Ronaldo. Also, we need to play Benzema as he is a better man to play as lone striker.

I think the starting lineup will be something like this: 4-2-3-1...Casillas-Ramos,Pepe,Garay(Albiol,if he is fit),Arbeloa-Lass,Alonso-Ronaldo,Kaka,Marcelo-Benzema.

OMG its a gurl! sex, plz?
Nah, but I agree with people. I think we will score once but that they will beat us by at least one goal. I don't like to make predictions, but I'd say 1-3, 2-3, or 2-4 are the scorelines we could see.h

Yeah, right, did Pellegrini plan his match strategy and simulate in a 6min-per-half on Fifa 10?

The result he saw was 4-1 and said
"Very well, Barca I'm gonna screw you"

Little did he know the difficulty was on Amateur.
