Sitting Pretty

Tuesday, 29 September 09, 01:29 PM · Comments(20)

Being a mortal of simple pleasures, for me, the win against Burnley on Saturday was the most enjoyable of the season thus far; surpassing even the trouncing of Liverpool in week one. Regardless of the quality of opposition, this result had everything. Even the most miserly of scrooges couldn’t wake up on Sunday morning with at least a dozen things to be pleased about. Hell, I woke up fully clothed smelling of pure gasoline and I felt like it was my birthday. I had a bounce in my heel for days.

Although, that could’ve been the blisters setting in.

(ahem)

If ever two players needed a big game, with all growing cynicism that swirls around them, then Keane and Jermain Jenas were those players. While neither have completely exorcised their demons, the fact that both of them played absolute blinders serves well as a double-whammy for those inexorable critics. Not that I haven’t vented the odd valve of frustration toward the pair in my time; but only out of a yearning to see better. Like which we all know they’re capable of.

Honest.

Keane will no doubt grab the headlines with his quartet of finishes and all-round nuisance making; but Jenas, also, deserves his customary hand-shake, if not a bear hug, from the boss. His energy was infectious against a dishevelled looking Burnley side, while the weight and precision of his passing was surgeon-like. Owen Coyle will know who to call if he needs a skin graft.

Couple these performances with our first clean-sheet of the season courtesy of our fifth central-defensive pairing (not to mention a curse lifted on our cameo-appearing, Gareth Bale) and there’re few reasons to be glum heading into the weekend’s jaunt at the Reebok.

Sitting pretty in a Champions League spot and it feels mightily fine.

Come on you bloomin' Spurs!

We did well, but Bolton has me a bit vexed. I was insistent earlier about not breaking up PSB and JD just to chop & change for MU and the Chavs, and the results there seems to validate that. But I'm tempted to say throw Crouchy in there at Bolton. You know they will be the typical dire, defensive, anti-football, "hope-to-nick-a-goal" Bolton, and that seems more like a game suited for 3MP.

So, PSB and Pete to start? With JD--fingers willing--as an impact sub?

What say you?

Well done you were 1st, does that make you feel all special now! No one sits there and sulks about how far down the posting list they are!!!
Re the story(which is what this is for btw), I agree 100% JJ was near his best, his workrate is top class, his ball to Keane(which he should have scored) in the 1st half was top draw. Yes Keane could have had 8 or 9 but no player scores all his chances. I just wished more people looked at his all round play and not just the goals. Remember its not just Harry coming to The Lane that has turned Spurs around, its also been since the return of(to me at least) a Spurs Legend!

I say, "Si!" Bolton's most dangerous from set plays, no? It's easy to imagine the presence of one Pedro Espigado being rather important in defending said set plays, in addition to all the usual stuff he brings to the table up front. Pedro's nailed on to start this one, for me. Handily, the injury to Defoe is the perfect cover story for dropping him to the bench for this one.

Get it? Handily?

Ahem.

Anyhoo, I'm looking forward to this one. Bolton is rubbish, and it's high time we went up there and made them look it. Here's hoping we give them the Hull away treatment.

He won`t change a winning team. Who`s he gonna drop?? Not defoe, and Keane scored 4!
I think he`ll start with the same team as saturday and bring on Crouch if we need him in the second half..
If it aint broke dont fix it, and if you retain posession againsed the likes of Bolton they will fold..
COYFS!

Unless i'm mistaken, the curse surrounding Bale concerns his starting Premier League games and us not winning. I think the curse is still in place...

Very pleased about the performance. Jenas was excellent but Thudd was my MOTM. Done his defensive duties brilliantly and his distribution from the back was as good as any i've seen.

I take real offense at Keane standing jesus-on-the-cross-like in front of me when he scores. You are not the messiah Robert, get over yourself. And while i'm on it, he should never have been given his number 10 back. He should have been made to wear that 15 for the rest of his Spurs career to remind his of just how lucky he is to be wearing a Tottenham shirt at all.

Applaud his goals and smile that Tottenham as a club have notched another goal, yes indeed. Cheer him? No.

One good game doesn't make a season, but a few more showings like that and I might escalate to small 'whoops' and hands raised above shoulder height. Until then, he has a lot more to do.

Keane has played his part in our whole turn around and as for takinf offence to arms out to his sides..........Get the hell over your self, its not a Jesus thing, its more likely to be opening up and celebrationg with the fans. Your the sort who complains about a program on tv that you think has to much swearing but watches it all! Jesus, you need to sort your life out!

Erm. No.

With Keane it's ego. Always has been, which is fine when you're showing loyalty and doing your job. However, from the moment he got back, he's had the attitude of a man who's come back to save us. Hats off to him for the goals on Saturday but I could live without the 'yes, yes, yes, ADORE ME lowly supporters as I present myself before thee'.

And can I just say how canny it is of you to sum up the kind of person I am after reading a blog post. Good job you haven't signed up to an oleole account, revealing your contact details, otherwise you'd surely be hunted from across the globe for your wiley observational skills. You sir, are awesome.

I can't help but note that the best clubs in the league "change a winning team" more or less every week. That's how you keep players fresh in a squad that's two or three deep at virtually every position. A winning team is the team that gives you the best chance of winning *this* game and is not necessarily the same team that won you the *previous* game.

Well said.

Our 'squad' has been severely tested this term; particularly the ever-changing back line. I think it's encouraging that those that have stepped in, sometimes way out of position, have done a job. Not many teams could change their central pairings so often and still churn out points. It makes things a little easier when you know your back-up aren't going to soil themselves when thrown into the deep end.

Which is nice.

Cheers, everyone. The quality of posting today/yesterday has been, to use a cliche, top drawer.

In the words of SSG and possibly Milhouse's dad:

I'm back off to the cracker factory.

Good day all.

Stay classy. 8)

It tough being a big wheel at the cracker factory. But the pocket full of saltines I nick each night makes it worthwhile.
