Wigan at Home: A Pre-Match Shakedown

Saturday, 21 November 09, 08:44 AM · Comments(18)

A difficult one to call, this. Wigan are an unpredictable bunch. Since arriving at the DW in June- with the gait of a man still owning two good hips- Roberto Martinez has laboured somewhat in coaxing momentum into a side who, twelve months ago, were brimming with the stuff. This time last year Wigan fans were purring under the leadership and bulbous conk of the much-loved Steve Bruce; a manager who operated within budget margins seemingly based on what could be found down the back of the sofa. In a brief tenure under a frugal chairman, Bruce had somehow assembled a side happily pulling its weight in the division. A jolly around Europe didn’t seem out of the question. Tottenham certainly wouldn’t be bothering them. At full strength Wigan could parade a starting eleven rife with power, strength and the odd flash of technical brilliance. Palacios, Figueroa, Valencia, Heskey- bare with me- Bramble- okay, that’s about the limit.

Inevitably, as Wigan started to take a downward slide, the high calibre assets were shipped out to the keenest bidder; we, ourselves, only too happy to take Sergeant Wilson off their hands for what now seems like spare change. Heskey, who led the line like a bulldozer in Lycra, gave in to the allure of working with an old flame while Antonio Valencia made the short trip across Lancashire to replace the irreplaceable. The side, left in tatters, with only Titus Bramble left to hold the fort with a yard brush and a hastily written name badge reading: Teem Leeder.

Martinez, Bruce’s proxy, has had plenty of work to do since then.

In fairness, for a squad that has taken multiple hits, they haven’t done too badly. Consistency seems to be the main gripe, that and a tendency to hammer the self destruct button at the mere suggestion. Beating Chelsea one week, conceding four at Portsmouth the next. God knows what they’ve got in store for us tomorrow. Hopefully a defence that leaks like a paper bag.

The bad news from our camp is that Modric is still wounded. No reports yet of any placenta being smeared on the damaged leg in question- but rest assured we’ve got our best man on it. What ever happened to unloading an entire can of Deep Heat on the problem? That’s what we did in school. I’ve still got the scars.

King is probably out, too, but replacements are on stand-by. Bassong, Dawson and Woodgate all limping through MOTs with- if not flying- certainly lovely colours. A nice mauve or burgundy perhaps. Anyway, they’re in.

And so is Lennon.

Buckaroo.

3-0 Spurs.

Yes, yes, y’all.

that's right,

obvious to say,but if they play well it should be a good game of football as martinez does like his teams to pass the ball, but that is also good for us because at the lane we should come out winners,

3-1 i say,be nice to keep a clean sheet but it's seems hard for us to do that over 90mins

it's hard to know what our lineup will be,with not knowing the full extent of lennon and co,but hopefully woody and dawson can do a solid job 2moro,

my guess at harry's 11

---------gomes---------
corluka woody dawson BAE
lennon tommy palacios kranjcar
-------keane defoe-------

Against teams like Wigan, just a win would be fine for me. I don't care how it comes...1-0, 2-0, 2-1 is all fine. 16-0 and 3 points would be preferable though :)

On as side note, those were lovely words from Krankie even though he's not a regular starter for us

Looking for the boy to turn on the style V Wigan.
The return of Azza, he's been sat on his arse for long enough, should be fresh as a daisy.
Mr Kojac has the line up bag on, subs- Pav wrap up warm son.
Up ya bollocks Foxy.

That's the team Koj, but I wonder if PSB is mentally ready after Henrygate?

he must be both mentally and physically tired,SSG

personally i'd play crouch and defoe, just because the other two have played in their playoff games

they can always come on and change the game if needed,

be interesting to see harry's lineup 2moro

It's going to be a tough one... could possibly be similar to the Sunderland match. I think they will hold their own but we can beat them. We need to beat them especially since all of yesterday's matches (bar Man U and Chelsea) have gone in our favor. These are the moments we need to capitalise on!

3 points please! COYS!!!!

Have you ever heard Kranjcar give an interview on television? His accent is virtually nonexistent! Honestly, if I didn’t know any better, I would guess he’s Canadian or something.

Puts people to shame doesn't it. Some are just unwilling or simply don't have the capacity to learn the lingo. Ramos, Pav? Tevez is getting criticised for this as well now, 3 years and not even pigeon. We've got another goodun here. Wouldn't mind seeing him play through the middle as well.

To be fair, some people have a natural aptitude for it, and others don't. Niko is quite clearly good at it. Perhaps he was taught English when he was young; I don't know. However, if he only began learning the language when he moved to Portsmouth in 2006, then I find his command of it very impressive indeed.
